Swiss black metal fiends VÍGLJÓS are keeping the flames roaring with a brand-new video for “A Seed of Aberration”, the second track to surface from their eagerly awaited sophomore album Tome II – ignis sacer.
Set to drop September 19 via Les Acteurs de L’Ombre Productions, the record is already shaping up to be a monster. Following the eerie, atmospheric first single “Claviceps”, this latest cut dives even deeper into VÍGLJÓS’ meticulously built blackened realm—where ritual, fire, and fury collide in unholy harmony.
Hailing from Basel and forged in 2022, VÍGLJÓS – Old Norse for “the light just bright enough to kill” – has emerged as a formidable four-piece unit, drawing talent from both Switzerland and Germany. Their arsenal now includes guitar, drums, mellotron, and vocals, and the band recently entered Hutch Sounds in Oberwil, BL, to record their sophomore opus under the watchful ear of Marc Obrist (Zeal & Ardor). Obrist’s precision in recording, mixing, and mastering ensures every shadow and crescendo lands with devastating clarity, while Adrian Smith’s artwork and Luca Piazzalonga’s layout frame the album in haunting visual style.
Though VÍGLJÓS wear the influence of Norwegian Second Wave Black Metal legends like Darkthrone and Immortal on their sleeves, their music refuses to be a simple throwback. Instead, it fuses the icy, feral edge of ’90s black metal with unexpected textures – ominous synths, twisting tremolo runs, and bursts of rock’n’roll energy – all layered over ethereal mellotron passages that pull listeners into the band’s grim, immersive world. Those lucky enough to witness them live speak of a full-sensory assault – auditory, visual, even olfactory—that lingers long after the final note fades. On Tome II – ignis sacer, VÍGLJÓS explore the dark legacy of ergotism – the poisoning caused by the claviceps fungus infecting wheat. This historical blight, which sparked social upheaval, witch hunts, and periodic civil chaos when conditions were ripe, forms the conceptual backbone of the album, shaping its cold, intoxicating narrative from start to finish.
